Sahara Disco - Athens This Week's #FreeLabRadio Show

DISCOTECA INTERNACIONAL
is a fairly new project launched by PALE PENGUIN and 246DESIGN in Greece.

Not just Greece but Thessalonki. Try saying that out loud a few times with an accent on the 'o', it's so satisfying - Thessalonki.

Blending music and influences from the five continents the pair DJ in clubs and bars worldwide. They also design these awesome posters and flyers, but still use hackneyed terms to describe what they do such as Afro-Beat. This is negligible though, in the face of the other ingredients to their mixes: Afro-Funk, Boogaloo, Carribbean calypso, Pakistani Pop, Indian Vibes, Cumbia, Bossa Nova, Nu-tango, Tijuana Electronica and "many more sounds for the body and mind pleasure..."

Super quirky. We love it.

It’s Technically Asia Until Istanbul - This Week's Free Lab Radio

Renowned sound artist and musician Otomo Yoshihide has launched an ambitious seven year project Ensemble Asia. Supported by Japan Foundation Yoshihide invited dj sniff (Hong Kong) and Yuen Chee Wai (Singapore) to direct one of the three streams of the project called Asian Music Networks, which connects independent music collectives across Asia to bring them together at their annual event, the Asian Meeting Festival.

Ahead of the festival in Tokyo and Kyoto, February 6-8th 2015 dj sniff releases this mix tape of participating artists, one that winds through an intensely creative stream of contemporary classical,  reworkings of modal systems and digitally manipulated compositions
that wildly spurn as many links to tradition as possible.

Otomo and sniff have both long performed with the Resonance Radio Orchestra at Resonance104.4FM and London Musician's Collective events, and live on air. We also recognise at least one of these tracks, the dramatical reworking of There's No Limits into assumed Chinese form by another one-time ResonanceFM artist Xper. Xr., a plaintive, angular track that rails against itself, and subverts our ideas of what a Chinese version of the 90s hit would have sounded like.

A region with such a long history, often struggles with its own inheritance. The arts, which should at some level be tapping into the unconscious, must acknowledge the psyche's own link to an idea of one's forefathers, trickled down through fables, images, architecture, behaviour and language.
