Sun-Ra in the Sky- It's Christmas Time...

Written by Alton Abraham and Sun Ra. A doo-wop holiday tribute to Sun Ra, produced by Sun Ra on Saturn Records, 1960.

SpaceDelica - This Week's Free Lab Radio: DJ Umb

Sometimes, you have to look back, to see the future.

A little background to this mix, by previous Free Lab Radio guest DJ Umb. The mix, originally in two parts, was triggered by a cassette mix tape: "The cassette is important because in a way it liberated me."

With retro cassette culture on the rise and labels that regularly launch on cassette (see our recent cassette-label show) it's apt that DJs and producers like DJ Umb give credit to how much these small recordables influenced our formative years.

Generation Bass blog and label founder DJ Umb explains what's behind his SpaceDelica mix:
My much older cousin who was so into Hi-NRG dance culture, gave me a hot mixtape many years ago on cassette. It was the first mixtape I had ever heard, and it blew my mind musically. Several of the tracks that I have now incorporated in this mix were on that tape cassette. The mix recreates that same vibe for me, listening to it, making it, I have that same euphoric feeling at that time. The feeling has not diminished one bit which is a testament to the timelessness of these tracks and the powerful effect of music on our souls.

Since 1968, Trojan Records has led the way in presenting the very best in classic Jamaican sounds. The labels releases have featured the best of Jamaican talent, with the likes of Bob Marley and The Wailers, Dennis Brown, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Toots andThe Maytals and The Inner Circle all included on its illustrious roster.
Earl began DJing in 1979 when he played reggae records between punk bands in Brixton and was heavily influenced by the Trojan releases of the time. Today Earl Gateshead and Trojan Sound System tour the globe playing records from the extensive Trojan catalogue, spreading the original message from Jamaica’s golden era of Reggae music. Recent shows include Glastonbury, Outlook, Boomtownfair, Bestival, Rototom Festival and club events at London’s biggest venue; Fabric.

In the late 70s, in the spirit of the times Earl built his own sound system at the world famous Dive Bar in Soho, where he established a reputation across London. Earl had a 20 year residency at The Dive Bar, which was sadly bought to an end in 2002 when the venue was closed. Throughout the later part of his Dive Bar years Earl became the Saturday night resident at clubs such as the internationally acclaimed Blue Note and later Fabric, where he was the resident Roots Reggae specialist.
In 2000 Earl organised and performed at a series of events called “Reggae Nights”. These legendary series of concerts received world wide attention, with performances from international legends such as; Alton Ellis, Dennis Alcapone, Adrian Sherwood and Saxon Sound System. This run of great success gave Earl a huge boost in profile, which lead him to be one of the most sought after DJs in the country and in high demand from international Reggae artists. He then went on to tour Europe and Australasia with Big Youth, Dr Alimantado and Cutty Ranks amongst others.

Invited to give a lecture at the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in Sao Paulo, Earl gave a comprehensive lecture on Reggae DJing and recorded a radio show for Red Bull.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Electro Posé (WDEF)

Tonight! The French 'music diffuser', normally 'broadcasting' online since 2013, has had their station go offline this month. The beauty of on demand though means the mixes are online for years afterwards.

Unknow What You Know - This Week's Free Lab Radio

This week your #FreeLabRadio producer played out on the beach here in Dubai, to a crowd of academics heavily involved in the electronic arts and young creatives living here in the UAE. ISEA2014, a roaming electronic arts festival is hosted this year by the United Arab Emirates. One visiting sound artist from Canada told me last night, "I would never dance to Love Shack, but that was the best damn remix I ever heard".

As a nod then to the possibilities of reinventing the way we hear familiar music, this week we present the Magic Drum Orchestra mix made for their release by bandleader Bigga Bush.

Broadcasts Saturday night 11-midnight, repeats Thursday 2am on 104.4FM across London, or online everywhere else.

Do you love the beats? The band have released their own drum sample pack.

Are you in a prison? No. Where you at? I'm nowhere man.

A Gray/Test Transmission mash up of two tracks one of which involves a phone call by the artist to the operator.

Remember the operator?

A human at the end of the line. The fortunate/unfortunate Basuiat burnt himself out but not before he made a significant contribution to art, music and the history of art. There's also a terrible human tragedy that surrounds not just his life but those he frequented. What is the use of tragedy? It's without doubt contains elements of a didactic nature, encoded with an example to onlookers; DO NOT REPEAT. Yet we are willfully ignorant again and again. Don't give up on people or exploit their weaknesses, especially the creatives. It will passively make you evil. Basquiat's (1960-88) unseen notebooks will be at Brooklyn Museum in 2015.

Are you in a prison? No. Where you at? I'm nowhere man....

"Free Lab Radio" - Stage Boundary Songs, DJ /rupture

STAGE BOUNDARY SONGS: a mixtape inspired by The Act of Killing

Stage Boundary Songs is a musical project by DJ /rupture, in response to Joshua Oppenheimer's award-winning, Oscar-nominated film The Act of Killing (2013).

Jace Clayton (DJ /rupture, WFMU) collaborated with Joshua Oppenheimer on a series of art-activism works back in the 1990s. In the vein of that same spirit, Clayton decided to produce Stage Boundary Songs as an online release, and invited Indonesian vocalist Nova Ruth to curate the music for the mix, which we broadcast Saturday 27th September, repeats Thursday 1st October 2-3am.

Nova Ruth then digitized gems from the rare vinyl collection of the Museum Musik Malang. She selected psychedelic folk, rock, and soul made in the decade surrounding Indonesia’s 1965 coup. These are mixed with Filastine's own productions, other contemporary strains of Indonesian music, samples of dialogue from the film, poetry and field recordings.

Rupture worked with The Act of Killing co-director Anonymous and researcher/ translator Richard Curtis to choose a selection of poems by Wiji Thukul, incorporating them into the mix in Indonesian and English. Wiji Thukul, a dissident people’s poet, is an icon of the country’s leftist democracy movement. Only a handful of his writings have been translated. Several are heard here in English for the first time. Thukul was disappeared by President Suharto’s anti-Communist 'New Order' regime in 1998. "I'm not a news-making celebrity," begins one of Thukul's poems, "but am, to be sure, bad news for those in power."

The cover artwork is adapted from a woodcut by Thukul’s daughter Wani, herself a poet. It was confiscated by government security forces in 1996 during a raid on Thukul’s home.

Two Fingers in the Air - This Week's Free Lab Radio Show

Fake fur massacre

At still from ISAM
11-midnight tonight we're airing the one and only mix put out by DJ Two Fingers this year. The reason it merits attention, apart from being a great mix, is that it's the only thing Two Fingers has produced this year, claiming "a year in the studio". This would not normally be significant but that Two Fingers is an alias for super-producer Amon Tobin. Tobin was on tour last year with his hyper-surreal DJ 'experience' ISAM. We caught the show at Camden Roundhouse, it was impressive, all enveloping and distant. The team working with Tobin created the most astounding projection mapping show perhaps of all time, while the DJ himself was mostly hidden inside the wall in a cube, only partially visible at moments during the show.

Two Fingers was originally a collaboration with fellow producer Joe “Doubleclick” Chapman. Their first eponymous release came out in 2009 and heavily featured UK vocalist Sway.
The second album, Stunt Rhythms was a solo work by Tobin and was released worldwide by Big Dada in 2012. The most popular track from Stunt Rhythms is Fools Rhythm, included in Ninja Tune's 20th anniversary "XX" box set,
Recent works include the theme music for the BBC America/Space original series Orphan Black, composed by Two Fingers and also the release Vengeance Rhythm which comes with the most brilliant teddy-bear slaughter video (pictured, and posted here at the time) in 2012.

Tonight's mix "TF DJ SET SEPT 2013", is a self-released free download made available in January 2014. It was produced by Tobin in Montreal, and comes with this proclaimer: "As this will be mainly a studio year for Amon we are posting one of 2013's Two Fingers DJ sets for you to download. Fond memories, good times. Thanks to all who stepped out and got down to this!"

He's still tweeting, however his musical silence is even louder after ISAM's echo. Broadcasts Saturday 11-midnight on 104.4FM (London), repeats Wednesday 2am. Listen live online with this handy RadioPlayer.

Free Lab Radio Returns for a New Season With Outra-Neo-Disco

Free Lab Radio kicks off this Autumn season with some disco-informed dance tracks. After a summer of public dancing to mostly soulless music, there remains only one thing to do if we are not to give up, this week we seek out the soul in outra neo-disco and remixes.

The hi-hats, lyrics and claps are still there but an array of technology has spread through the notion of disco's musical style.

http://radioplayer.resonancefm.com/console/Free Lab Radio broadcasts Saturdays 11-midnight BST (British Summer Time), three hours behind GST (Gulf Standard Time, where the show is produced).

Featured this week are Sinkane, Shit Robot, Midnight Magic, Simian Mobile Disco, Alesia, The Thompson Twins, Yelle, Analog People in a Digital World, Evan Evans and Étienne de Crécy.

This season of #FreeLabRadio we go for an  international survey of what people are dancing to and producing from Europe to East Asia. We'll be hosting guest producers from the Gulf and beyond. Keep up with us HERE or #FreeLabRadio on Twitter.

Repeats weekly Thursdays 2am BST.

This Week's Free Lab Radio Show - Remember Me

This week's show is a progression from last week's mix, for long summer car journeys.

This week it's all about singing along to lyrics in the car. A mix of obscure and guilty pleasures, lyric-laden tracks for the discerning listener who sings in the shower, the car, in their head as they walk down the street...

The Overheated Motor mix is available for free download below, currently. Grab it!

Listen in at 11-midnight (BST) on 104.4FM in London or online otherwise. Repeats Wednesday 2am.

Formidable. Papoutai by Stromae.

One of our favourites tracks from this week's Free Lab Radio mix is a remix which features Belgian singer-songwriter Stromae.
Papaoutai is a forceful track sung from the perspective of a child whose father was never home. The refrain "Ou ton Papa? Tell me where you father is?" is what people constantly asked the singer at school and as a child in Belgium, as Stromae's father died in the Rwandan Genocide where of course Belgium was the last colonial power.
We've found a translation of the lyrics below. "Everyone's knows how to make babies but they don't all know how to be fathers." The choreography is amazing, especially at 2' when the kid learns to adopt the dance and when the kids lead.

Although there are elements of Eurotrash in Stromae's musical production (well, Belgium), the minimalism and the elements of African influence, which are also echoed in the videos and costumes, more than make up for it. For elements of thism see his latest track Ta Fete (slang for 'your day') and for his satirical play on Belgian identity and attitude to sex, check out Moules Frites.

Are we sure he has a sense of hunour? Of course, look at his entrance to the NRJ Music Awards. His strongest work? Tous les mêmes without a doubt. It's moving into another realm of treatment of subject matter and drawing on traditions in music and performance that will eventually make his work classic. Oh yes, the English translation.

I Dream of Wires.

Songs that influence.

"We opened doors by thinking

We went to sleep by dialing o
We drove to work by proxy
I plugged my wife in, just for show."

This Week: #FreeLabRadio - Overheated Motor

Overheated Motor

Free Lab Radio host Fari Bradley presents a mix for cars on long journeys in blazing summer heat. Broadcasts 11pm Saturday night BST (British Summer Time), repeats Wednesday 2am.

Featured are the La Chiva Gantiva, DJ Schmolli, Mr Oizo, Noir Désir, Beastie Boys, Persian (from Essex), Wildbirds and Peacedrums, Alek AK (Iran), Stromae and more.

"Ou es ton papa?" - "Where's your papa?" which is what Stromae is saying people always asked him at school. It's a very diligent match to the Prodigy track, which is about doing a thing intensely, to a more than harmful degree.

Radio Cosmosis - Neologisms

Cosmacoma is one of those terms you've coined to explain a phenomenon that you don't know the term for, because there may not be one. It began with me thinking of Cosmosis which I had no idea was already loosely a pysche musical term, just today as I was looking to describe the dreamy but driven state of a radically religious person of any denomination who barely interacts with this life because they're purely engaged with the next.  It's a fervour that makes one distant now, preparing to even die for what comes next, a militant romanticism comparable with medieval crusadic Christian poetry. I had already contemplated this state without giving it concise a name while reading  How to Win a Cosmic War by Reza Aslan some years ago, in which he describes the thinking (or absence of, hence Cosmacoma as an extension of Cosmosis) linked to coma) of those that kill in the name of faith. Aslan does this by relating the narrative from the imagined perspective of suicidists based on what he knew of their faith and their actions:

"He was not coerced into committing his awful crime; he was not brainwashed. He was a zealot, acting alone and without guidance from anyone save God; he was a knight, called by God to renew his faith by shedding the blood of unbelievers; he was a martyr, sacrificing his own life for the lives of 'his people."

But sure enough look it up and Cosmosis is primarily a musical term, the psyche kids have been there on mushrooms and whatever they've taken, and made the term part of their chillosophy. There's even a Radio Cosmosis beaming out of Nashville, Tennessee.

"To enlighten and be enlightened musically."

In the end the term I need to use is Cosmacoma. In any case, thinking about it led me to these 'cosmic' mixes from Iranian Sama living in Cyprus, for which I'm grateful.

Performing since 1998 by producer, Dj and multi-instrumentalist Mayur Narvekar, Bandish has been experimenting with Indian folk melodies of yore fused with IDM, releasing their first album in 2009 with the album ‘CORREKT’. Now in 2014 the newest album is called CONNEKT, and despite having released albums since then, there hast been a media buzz about them since the single “BROWN SKIN BEAUTY “ feat. Last Mango In Paris, all released on Bheja Fry Records. BANDISH PROJEKT has performed in Dubai, UK, Sweden, France, Amsterdam, Australia and at Glastonbury, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Sommerszene festival (Austria), Melbourne Electronic Festival, and more.
Tonight's Bandish sample mix is titled Liberté which means freedom in French, features a wide range of sound elements mashed up with Indian classical, Marathi film music, and samples currently in my ear...all the result of what I am hearing from all around the world. I dedicate this mix to all those that seek Freedom in all its forms: creative, political, spiritual and human.

This Week's Free Lab Radio Mixx - ZZK by Frikstailers

Cumbia, space, bubblegum - this duo from Argentina Rafa Caivano and Lisandro Sona love hypnotic, tribal sounds.

They've delivered a superbly deranged remix of Die Anterwoord, and since 2006 have been playing tunes that in Latin America are considered trashy, even today. Set for a major tour, they've come to the attention of some of the mainstream trendmakers in the digital music scene, since their Redbull PanAmerika listings.

This mix is from their first label ZZK based in Buenos Aires, and although the duo have relocated to Mexico, they won't be at home for a long while as they ride out their success. You can get their more recent mixtape Thump for free HERE.
11-midnight on http://radioplayer.resonancefm.com/console/
The last part of the show is a track by Umisetsu & Martin Dot, called Greenwater, selected by Chris Weaver for tonight's show. This long tonal track was originally on an album from Rain Netlabel and was rereleased by Phlow Magazine "Their Finest Hour". It's been in Fari's playlist for some years now!

But before we get too excited, MIA is just doing what she does best, hunting out what's cool and edgy in subcultures so that she can play off that. Parrots, neon, dogs, monkeys, MIA and the Party Squad make a tropical zoo out of estate life. The video  here - aside from the musical reference below; Shampoo Trouble - an Orwellian Dystopia in which we are monitored from the sky and online, and kids printing guns are either prepping for war or to burn out in schemes of their own doing.

Much like the Shampoo rebels below thrown
out of the O Bar last century (the bar's still standing by the way) these kids are spirited, the best bit is the girls in burqas with the faces of other women printed on them, many of the kids are twins (a reference to the increased use of fertility drugs or cloning). What's weird is not the retro nature of the video, so many producers are into retro right now (check Casiokids) or the retro beat (TIME magazine mistakenly call it dubstep-inspired, but really it's a mash up of styles and works well that way) it's the way the kids behave, there are no adults present (aside from Mamma-MIA) plus the fact that she uses auto-tune and no one minds. These kids don't rate each other on their guns, the DIY guns look like toys, and they hang out in prison regulation sweatpants under the UFO-like drones. Nevermind that drones now can be as small as a bug.

"This sounds like science fiction, but to some it's not so far fetched..."
This isn't what we expected to hearing about MIA right now. For example, how's she managing that   $16.6 million lawsuit from the NFL for flipping the bird at the Superbowl?

Tonight's Free Lab Radio Show - Sleeve Notes

Tonight it's all about the sleeve notes, in the age of the mp3 that comes without a real gift that can be touched and physically enjoyed, we're driven to play tracks from CDs for which we've got sleeve notes, different paper textures, artwork and graphics as well the text and lyrics. So coming to you from the land of CD case and sleeve, all taken from the shelves here at the Bradley/Weaver Household, we've a really mixed bag, Italy, Peckham, Texas…
Features are Jerome Bourdellon, the track from Trajet Solo: Papaoel.  The sleeve notes to this CD include a quote from John Cage
"This is a talk about something and naturally nothing. About how something and nothing are not opposed to each other but need each other to  keep on going."

Sudori an album by Pino Minafra with an inset essay by art historian and editor of "Jazzthetik" Markus Muller; referencing ethnologist Claude Levi Strauss saying

"Listening to Pino Minafra is about reactivating our hidden perceptive faculties, in the widest sense, its about discerning planets during daylight and to suddenly realise that these planets must have spun out of one of those black holes in the contemporary music universe that no one of us , due to the so-called age of information, expects anymore.

From Milan then, we hear the track Trib-Bal.

Plus author and musician Kirk Lake, who we recently played on Free Lab Radio for his collaboration with UK Pakistani artist Shezad Dawood, sent in his CD the album The Black Lights, from which we sample two tracks Clarke Vs Tyson and the unusually titled "Finish your drink so I can get your glass to the wall there's something more interesting happening next door."
Plus 'Kymatik' with their album Dars Al Sulh, and the long track Denists for Mice.

Also on tonight's show are returning Middle Eastern band Boogie Balagan, we hear from them Mojo Lady 75 "she's a warda from Tarabeen, my parisienne" and Dalida Blooz (the Baboosh Remix).

Now two short tracks from the CD by FlameProofMoth (previously known as The Boycott CocaCola Experience) Women Should be in Charge; Retail Opera and a very short version of an already short song, his most well known track, Gas.

Kate Bush with Ariel from the double album, called Ariel (pictured).

Secret Archives of the Vatican who's CD sleeve features from Arabic digital art Babylon Halt, their track from it "Isa Al Hamid."
Lastly Salif Keita, an internationally recognized Afro-Pop singer, an albino and a direct descendant of the founder of the Mali Empire, with his track Nou Pas Bouger, meaning Don't move us, or Don't shift us.
